My love for Soccer

"Since when you were a baby, you will take your clothes, roll it into a round shape and start kicking and running after it around the house" - My Mother

That is the earliest memory of when I started playing soccer - or as my people call it, Football.

I don't remember when I started playing, but ever since I was younger I remember going outside to play with my friends every evening. Except on days I had to go to church.

I would play from about 4pm to around 7pm. We started by playing barefooted on the road/asphalt between houses, then we graduated to barefooted on different fields, and finally to with boots/cleats on full-size soccer field.

I wasn't always the best player, but you can be sure I was one of the most present. My persistent playing only made me improve and continue to get better. I have been called names like "van Persie", "Viduka", Tuno, and most famously "Jan Koller". The names stem from my playing style, favorite positions, and height.

  • Van Persie - because I'm a left-footed forward

  • Viduka - because I supported Leeds United back in the early 2000's

  • Tuno - because someone didn't know which name to put on my jersey

  • Koller - because I'm a 6'4" Striker. A big striker.

Around ages 13/14 I started playing with guys who were much older and better than I was. It was only a matter of time before I became a regular and they became my teammate.

In 2005 my friends and I signed up to play in the famous (back at home famous) Ijede Oba Palace Cup, where against all oppositions, we emerged as winners.

I will go on to win the Intramurals at Jacksonville State University, AL with my teams in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016.

In 2014, 2015 and 2016 I played in and won back-to-back Latino League Sunday Soccer (origin of Tuno)

In 1996 I had just began to take full interest in watching soccer and I had seen Euro 1996 where, in my opinion, Karel Poborský was one of the best players.

A few months later, I watched a 21-year old David Beckham score a worldie from the half-way line for Manchester United against Wimbledon FC.

Not long after I discovered Karel Poborský was a Manchester United player. I instantly fell in love with Manchester United and became a fan.

As if all that was not enough, 1999 I was 12 years old when this happened

And then in 2008 again

These two and more were the success brought to Manchester United by the great Sir Alex Ferguson between 1986 and 2013.

You can see why it was so easy for me to love the club. Let's not talk about the quality of players that have come through the club. That's a story for another day.

My love for this game is going stronger than ever, mainly because I'm looking forward to playing with my kids sooner than later.
